THREE MONKS

The film is based on the ancient Chinese proverb "One monk will shoulder two buckets of water; two monks will share the load, but add a third and no one will want to fetch water.

A young monk lives a simple life in a temple on top of a hill. He has one daily task of hauling two buckets of water up the hill. He tries to share the job with another monk, but the carry pole is only long enough for one bucket. The arrival of a third monk prompts everyone to expect that someone else will take on the chore. Consequently, no one fetches water though everybody is thirsty. At night, a rat comes to scrounge and then knocks the candle holder, leading to a devastating fire in the temple. The three monks finally unite together and make a concerted effort to put out the fire. Since then they understand the old saying "unity is strength" and begin to live a harmonious life. The temple never lacks water again.

1) One monk at the temple-
With one Pole and two buckets, first monk fetches water from pond.
Total Buckets carried = 2, Total work done = 1 unit

2) Two monk at the temple-
Both monks firstly behave friendly but when they needed water, no one was ready to fetch it. So they come up with sharing of load, where 2 monks will carry only one bucket which will be in the exactly middle of the pole.
So,
Total Buckets carried = 1, Total work done = .50 x 1 = 0.5 unit

3) Three monk at the temple-
When third monk joins them in temple, all three of them starts expecting from other 2 to bring water and so no one fetches water. So in all work done is null.
Total Buckets carried = 0, Total work done = .0 unit

4) Three monk at the temple (Solution)-
In crisis situation, all three make effort and with sharing of load, all 3 were able to fix the problem and also get united. So they come up with a solution for future and divide the work proportionately.
So,
Total Buckets carried = 2, Total work done = .33 x 3 = 1 units

 learning and understanding:-
TEAM - 'T'OGETHER
               'E'VERYONE
              'A'CHIEVES
             'M'ORE

  • Unity in Strength -
Unity means oneness, or togetherness. When there is oneness there is likely to be more strength in opinion, more strength in action, and more strength in character. This is a very simple and obvious fact that, if one person tries his hands on some job, he will manage much less than what a group effort will achieve.
  • Teamwork -
Team work is essential in corporate for better output and a better bonding among employees.. In a team, Workload is shared and individuals feel motivated to perform better than his team members
  • Division of work or labour -
Division of labour represents a qualitative increase in productivity. In a successful organization, work and labour is divided as per economic, technological and physical strength of individual. Such structured division lead to success.

A good team can perform any task, the authority and responsibilities need to be delegated properly.  It is true that a miss-happening brings people together but that doesn't mean, we should wait for one to put things in order.

GOAL SETTING AND PYGMALION EFFECT

To my surprise, this time class started in a conventional way and we all were sitting on our respective chair. Sir clearly said what we going to study and discuss in class. topics for the class were SMART GOALS and PYGMALION EFFECT
Of course we all know what the acronym stands for, but Dr, Mandi encouraged us to interpret it in our different styles. To interpret an idea or a principle, apart from the conventional manner, is one of the most important characteristic a manager needs to have to be successful.

With this in mind, we began to define SMART in different manners as below:
S – Simple, Superb, Synchronized, Stunning
M – Marvelous, Mind Boggling, Mature, Macho, Magical
A – Abounding, Absolute, Accelerated, Accurate, Adventurous, Admirable
R – Real, Radical, Rational, Resourced, Resonant, Realistic
T – Tactical, Tangible, Tenacious, Thrilling.

The Top Two Business Benefits of Clearly Setting and Aligning Organizational Goals across the Company:
1. Increased Operating Margins
Employees who clearly understand their individual goals-and how they relate to those of your company-naturally become more engaged with their work.
  • Increases employee engagement with "SMART" goals
  • Provides visibility up, down and across reporting levels
  • Creates shared accountability between employees by "cascading" goals from one employee to another when relevant
  • Communicates expectations clearly during every phase of goal completion

2. Quicker Execution of Company Strategy

Tighter goal alignment and goal visibility allows for quicker execution of company strategy by enabling your management team to more effectively allocate labour resources across various projects.
  • Understand more clearly all responsibilities associated with specific goals
  • Eliminate redundancies across job titles
  • Focus their staffs on your company's most pertinent goals

PYGMALION EFFECT: A SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY

Pygmalion was a very talented sculptor in ancient Greece who loved his work, and would spend hours carving beautiful ivory statues, immersing himself in his art. One day, he chose a large, beautiful piece of ivory, and worked diligently at it, chiselling and hammering until he finished. It was a statue of a beautiful lady. Pygmalion thought it was so beautiful, he clothed the figure, gave it jewels, and named it Galatea (sleeping love). Pygmalion went to the temple of Aphrodite (Venus), the goddess of love and beauty to pray for a wife just like the statue in his home.

When Aphrodite heard him, she went to the home of he sculptor to see what all the fuss was about. She was delighted when she saw Galatea. She thought it looked a lot like her, so she brought it to life. When the sculptor returned home, he found Galatea alive, and threw himself at her feet. Galatea smiled down at him. They soon got married, and Pygmalion didn't forget to thank Aphrodite for his good fortune. He and Galatea brought gifts to her altar as long as they lived. Aphrodite blessed them with happiness and love in return.

The Pygmalion Effect is a psychological phenomenon that encompasses the idea
that what one expects of an individual becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Holding high expectations for all and translating them into meaningful actions is surely not a simple task. It is an ongoing effort that changes and grows as we face new challenges and have fresh insights.
