To my surprise,
this time class started in a conventional way and we all were sitting on our
respective chair. Sir clearly said what we going to study and discuss in class.
topics for the class were SMART GOALS and PYGMALION EFFECT
Of
course we all know what the acronym stands for, but Dr, Mandi encouraged us to
interpret it in our different styles. To interpret an idea or a principle,
apart from the conventional manner, is one of the most important characteristic
a manager needs to have to be successful.
With this in mind, we began
to define SMART in different manners as below:
S – Simple, Superb,
Synchronized, Stunning
M – Marvelous, Mind
Boggling, Mature, Macho, Magical
A – Abounding, Absolute,
Accelerated, Accurate, Adventurous, Admirable
R – Real, Radical,
Rational, Resourced, Resonant, Realistic
T – Tactical, Tangible,
Tenacious, Thrilling.
The
Top Two Business Benefits of Clearly Setting and Aligning Organizational
Goals across the Company:
1.
Increased Operating Margins
Employees
who clearly understand their individual goals-and how they relate to those of
your company-naturally become more engaged with their work.
- Increases employee engagement with "SMART" goals
- Provides visibility up, down and across reporting levels
- Creates shared accountability between employees by "cascading" goals from one employee to another when relevant
- Communicates expectations clearly during every phase of goal completion
2. Quicker Execution of Company Strategy
Tighter goal alignment and goal visibility allows for quicker execution of company strategy by enabling your management team to more effectively allocate labour resources across various projects.
- Understand more clearly all responsibilities associated with specific goals
- Eliminate redundancies across job titles
- Focus their staffs on your company's most pertinent goals
PYGMALION
EFFECT: A SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY
Pygmalion was a very
talented sculptor in ancient Greece who loved his work, and would spend hours
carving beautiful ivory statues, immersing himself in his art. One day, he
chose a large, beautiful piece of ivory, and worked diligently at it, chiselling
and hammering until he finished. It was a statue of a beautiful lady. Pygmalion
thought it was so beautiful, he clothed the figure, gave it jewels, and named
it Galatea (sleeping love). Pygmalion went to the temple of Aphrodite (Venus),
the goddess of love and beauty to pray for a wife just like the statue in his
home.
When
Aphrodite heard him, she went to the home of he sculptor to see what all the
fuss was about. She was delighted when she saw Galatea. She thought it looked a
lot like her, so she brought it to life. When the sculptor returned home, he
found Galatea alive, and threw himself at her feet. Galatea smiled down at him.
They soon got married, and Pygmalion didn't forget to thank Aphrodite for his
good fortune. He and Galatea brought gifts to her altar as long as they lived.
Aphrodite blessed them with happiness and love in return.
The
Pygmalion Effect is a psychological phenomenon that encompasses the idea
that what one expects of an individual becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
that what one expects of an individual becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Holding high expectations
for all and translating them into meaningful actions is surely not a simple
task. It is an ongoing effort that changes and grows as we face new challenges
and have fresh insights.
